[FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica]I recieved a short but interesting email reply from i-pmart who claimed I didn't need a flash cable for the I68+. They said I could use the USB cable that came with the phone to flash with. I have since asked them to explain. We shall see.

I've learned one important thing about electronics over the years... If you let the smoke out, it will usually stop working. :)

I'm thinking of inventing a smoke reclaimation system.....

That really sounds fantastic but I doubt it!!!! :(
Never ever have I seen a Chinese phone that can be flashed with a regular data cable!!! I HOPE I'm wrong, though ;)

But when you think about it. If your mobile phone is connected to your computer as a com-port, why does the computer would'nt accept it? I don't think that windows could differ between a regular com port or a com port simulation by the phone. By the way, an USB to RS232 converter is the same thing an that should work without any problems.
The only thing what could be is, that you need a Null-Modem cable (hope it is the wright word for it) to flash the mobile phones. That is pretty often by flash-memory units like satelite receivers, PDAs, and so on, so maybe also in this case

Cyberdog is wright. The Flash Cable (also a COM-Cable) is the hardware solution, the COM-Feature on the phone is the Software Solution.

so both shoul work the same way!

I WISH it'd be possible to use the regular datacable without modifying it but I REALLY REALLY REALLY doubt it!!!

My ciPhone has the com port feature as well, the only thing anyone was ever able to do with the regular data cable was to change the phone's IMEI, THAT'S IT!!! For everthing else firmware flashing related, a flash cable is absolutely mandatory!!!! If it were that "easy" to flash a phone with a regular data cable, then why on earth even produce a different cable for flashing purposes?!? That wouldn't make sense, right?!?

So, unless somebody comes up with an ingenious flashing software solution, I really don't think there is a way around a flashing cable that's compatible with the "well known" flashing tools like Spiderman, MTK Flashtool or even the Multi-Port download tool (that's the #1 flashing tool choice of our Chinese friends when it comes to flashing the ciPhone) ;)

There could be some reasons, why you need a Com-cable, insteed of converter/simlulation, for example:
- Some or most of the USB to RS232 converters don't provide the "break"-commando, because for the most programms it is not necesseray and it is no standart, but some programms still work with it to reset the interface.
- the USB only provides 5Vdc and most of the converters are not pushing up to the voltage standart of a "real" com-port, I think it is about 10-15Vdc
- And at least, a lot of the converters don't simulate the complete RS232 standart pins assignment, which maybe the falshing tools need.

This could be all reasons, why the the com-port simulation of the mobile phones don't work.
Also, when you got the possiblity to change your flashing software, which cost you as a company money for the devolpment. Or you sell a cable for flashing and earn some for it, what would you do?

Best regards
Timothy
